Weight, balance and flexibility are the determining factors in playing qualities of all bows – all of our bows are hand selected to achieve the optimal combination of these criteria. Our premium bows are selected for students, teachers and professionals who desire luxury craftsmanship, quality and sound.
Arcus – available for violin, viola and cello. Arcus bows are entirely made in Germany and use carbon fibre materials that are made to exacting specifications. Arcus bows are hollow with a thin wall, just like instruments, and vibrate much more freely than any with a solid core. The ‘P’ series offers musicians a higher resiliency in the stick. The P-bows a very nicely balanced, with a wide range of brilliant tonal overtones. These bows are easily manoeuvrable, strong and work for nearly every type of player and instrument. The ‘S’ series is incredibly light, making them unbelievably fast and nimble, and the sound is brighter and even more brilliant than the P-bows. Our favourite picks? Dorfler – available for violin, viola, cello and double bass. Dorfler bows are handcrafted in Germany by the Dorfler family, now in their third and fourth generations of archetiers. They use precious and exquisite materials in order to guarantee master performance and technical ability. Pernambuco wood is used predominantly in their workshops, as it constantly fulfills the demands of exact bending and greatest possible tension at the ideal weight. Their bow hair is sourced exclusively in Inner Asia, and elaborate mountings of mother of pearl and precious metals on the ebony frog lend the Dorfler bows their beautiful appearance and long lifetime. Sturm – available for violin, viola and cello. Sturm handcraft a number of bows each year in Germany. High-quality Pernambuco and Brazilwood are sourced from Brazil and are dried for a number of years in their workshops. Sturm use high-quality materials that have stood the test of time in order to ensure the highest quality playing experience for professional musicians. Our favourite picks? Knoll – available for violin. Knoll Bows was founded in 1932 by Alfred Knoll. The company has now spanned three generations of the Knoll family of master luthiers. They produce individually manufactured violin, viola, cello, gamba and bass bows in an extensive range. The quality range of their products extends from the good student bow to the highest requirements of the master’s bow. Through decades of experience as well as intensive exchange with musicians and workmates, detailed features have been identified and adapted to meet the highest demands. This ability is attested by medals in national and international exhibitions and competitions.
Seifert – available for violin. The Seifert workshop was founded by Oskar Seifert in 1932 who learned the craft of bowmaking from Albert Renz in Erlbach. They have a wide range of bows from a more student-intermediate level to top-quality soloist bows made by their master bowmakers. The Seifert workshop produce a small amount of bows each year & they are entirely made by hand. All wood used has been naturally dried in their workshop for more than 20 years. Each bow produced is unique and of the highest standard.
Carbon Fibre Bows
For advanced string players wishing to use non-organic bows, we have the outstanding performance options Arcus and Musing from Germany. These two amazing lines were developed in the workshops of a brilliantly inventive archetier and offer a wide range of performance options. Arcus bows are made from moulded carbon fibre. Musing bows are braided carbon fibre produced with 3D technology. All the bows in both product ranges are designed for advanced levels of performance.
