Caring for Your String Instrument Through Summer

Caring for Your String Instrument Through Summer

As the weather heats up, caring for your instrument becomes more important than ever. High temperatures and changing humidity levels can affect your instrument in many ways, whether it’s a violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Knowing how to care for your instrument during summer will help keep it sounding beautiful all season long.

Dry Heat vs Humid Heat

Summer can bring two very different types of heat: dry heat and humid heat. Each affects your instrument in different ways, and understanding the difference is key!

Dry Heat

Dry summer heat is common in many parts of Australia, especially inland. When humidity drops, your instrument loses moisture, increasing the risk of the wood shrinking or developing cracks. Keeping it hydrated and protected can make all the difference.

Tips for Dry Heat:

  • Keep your instrument in a case with a humidifier to maintain stable moisture levels. It's much easier to maintain an ideal humidity level (30% - 60%) if your instrument is it’s case. (Shop Humidifiers for Violin/Viola, Cello and Double Bass)

Humid Heat

In coastal areas, summer brings humid heat, which can be even more challenging. Excess moisture can soften the hide glue, which may lead to open seams, a loose fingerboard, or even movement in the neck. Keeping your instrument dry and stored safely is essential during the warmer and more humid months.

Tips for Humid Heat:

  • Use a dehumidifier in your case to absorb excess moisture from the air. We highly recommend the M.U.D Dehumidifier.
  • Make sure your instrument is stored somewhere with plenty of airflow to avoid mould/mildew.

General Summer Care Tips

Regardless of your climate, these tips will help your instrument survive the heat:

  • Temperature awareness: Avoid leaving your instrument in cars or in direct sunlight. Extreme temperatures can be damaging.
  • Wipe down your instrument and strings: Summer heat means more sweat, so it’s important to wipe your strings, fingerboard, and chin rest after playing to keep your instrument clean and hygienic.
  • Regular maintenance: Schedule a summer check-up with your luthier to address any minor issues before they become major problems.
